The letters of our thoughts are the ideas present in our mind before they come to realization . . . Thoughts that are, yet not felt . . . The words of the subconscious . . . of the soul . . .

These are the LETTERS OF MY THOUGHTS.

Special Seven Meme

I was tagged by Irina with the Seven Meme . . . I don't know why she felt it was an unlucky Seven -to me Seven is a good number. Just think about it, seven days of creation, seven days of week, Shabbos -the seventh day, seven emotional attributes, seven branches of the Menorah, seven blessings under the chupa.

  • When I drink Coffee, if it's instant then I need sugar, but if it's freshly brewed (preferred) then I drink it with out . . . But always with milk.
  • I've mentioned in the past that I love trivia . . . I especially love to look up if someone famous is Jewish. Whenever I see the name of an author, professor, actor or what-have-you in the news, I immediately do a Google search if he is Jewish.
  • I want a Zune . . . For some reason or another, I really want to get one. I'm not sure why I keep thinking about getting one - perhaps its the offer for a 30 gig first gen for 89 shipped, or the fact that the 2nd gen did well on Cnet's review. My 3rd Generation iPod is fine for what I need though, so unless someone sponsors one, I don't think I'm changing anytime soon.
  • My last name, Lightstone, went through no less then three or four changes to get where it is today. Originally it was Kasdin, then Aidelstein, possibly Lichtenstein, then Ligtstone.
  • I always wore fedora hats, even as a kid . . .
  • I've wandered around dozens of European cities, several times with no company, and felt fine. Yet for some reason I feel oddly uneasy about walking around Manhattan, as if I'll get lost or worse. Perhaps it's something subconscious from memories of my first visit as a kid - my mother was pickpocketed, or perhaps its the inner Angeleno in me.
  • I collect liquor tax seals from bottles of Vodka in countries that I have spent time in. I have one from Italy, one from Poland, one from Lithuania, and one from S. Marino (It's actually an newer Italian one, but since I got it in S. Marino, and it looks different from my 'Italian' one . . . ) I was unfortunately unable to get one in Ukraine, and didn't see any in France or Germany . . .
So there you have it, seven inane facts that you probably never wanted to hear about me.
I now pass on the Meme to:

Who Knows What Evil Lurks in the Hearts of Men?

The Shotgun knows.

Everything seems to be going wrong . . . My Zune is in a coma (refuah shleima!), and other such problems. Normally from a blogging perspective, that aint all that bad -at least it provides fodder for posts. Alas, for now at least, the well seems to be dry -if not the well, then perhaps the will. I have ideas, but by the time I get around to writing them, I no longer have the energy or desire to so so.

And the beat goes on . . .

One thing that does bother me, and I write this with the knowing danger in which I place myself, is the inanity of Shidduch Resumes.

Yes I'm going there, despite my better judgment . . . but I've long since gotten over the Google searches that bring the prying eye to this blog - the google queries such as

"Who is Mordechai Lightstone?"

-Who is he indeed?

and let us not forget the classic (and amazingly arrogant)

"Is Lightstone a Jewish name?"

-To which I respond, no -it's actually the name of Catholic Nazi Arabs from Mexico -just like Goldmountain and Pikefish . . . But of course I jest, for Lightstone is merely a translation of Adelstein, just as Goldmountain being Goldberg and Pikefish being Hecht -all three names being mostly the result of the Austro-Hungarian decision to mandate surnames two centuries back . . .

But I digress.

All of that is fine with me -what bothers me is the asinine concept of resumes.

As an example for those who have not yet been graced with these pearls of human briliance, I present a sample resume -names and facts have been changed to protect the innocent, and to certain details have been altered . . . or made up.

Name: Shprintza Cherna Masha Podalski (for the record, all four of those names are of distinctly non-Jewish origin)

Age: 21
Employment Record: Head counselor Camp Gan Izzy of Yehupitz (three summers), Shlichus in Kazakhstan (present )
Height: 4' 2" Eyes: Hazel Brown, kinda yellow with an aquamarine hint
Education:
Beis Rivkah, and three amazing years in Tzfat!!!
Languages: English, Evrit, some Yiddish, Quechua
Hair:
Brownish Weight: Undefined
Blood-type: B- Social Security #: 101-61-3770

Known as Shprintza Cherna Masha Podalski, her nicknames are Shprintzy, Cherny, and Mashy by her friends and Shprintzy Cherny Mashy by family.

Her father was born on Dec 3, 1950, grew up on a secret military facility with his parents, who were of great rabbinic origin, and after living for three years in India, went on to get smicha in a Lubavitcher Yeshivah. He is a normal person, with no history of anything negative. His wife is the same.

No disciplinary or administrative actions (i.e. probation, suspension, expulsion)
been taken against Shprintza Cherna Masha Podalski by Shprintza Cherna Masha Podalski's school nor are any pending.

Shprintza Cherna Masha Podalski has never been charged with or convicted of any criminal offense, DWI or misdemeanor offense.

Shprintza Cherna Masha has never used, possessed, supplied or manufactured any illegal drugs.

Shprintza Cherna Masha has no record of any mental health issues nor does she wish her husband to have such records.
She wakes up every morning at exactly 6:44 a.m. EST, and is willing to have a husband who sleeps in a little bit, but not too much -perhaps 6:46 a.m. EST.

She only listens to the most chassideshe niggunim, such as a Nichoach, anything with drums and Oys, and some Avraham Fried -though not Chazak because her mashpia once told her that she heard from a certain Rebbetzin that it might have been taken from a Goyishe, Turkishe song -r"l

She eats two slices of toast for breakfast with a hard boiled egg, some marmalaide jam, and half a cup of orange juice or milk.

Analysis

Has a thick frame with good upper-body muscle tone, long arms, wide hips, thick thighs and calves...Also has room on her frame to add at least another 20 pounds of bulk without having the added weight impact her overall quickness...Shows good quickness and body control for a player of her size...Take-charge type and field leader who plays with good field awareness and is an aggressive blocker who has the knowledge to call blocking adjustments up front...Sound technically and can be a drive blocker who shows good explosion in her initial step off the snap...Keeps her balance working into the second level and has a wide leg base in her pass set...Good second-effort blocker who stays with her man throughout the whistle, but also shows the vision to locate secondary targets...Plays with a mean streak, looking to constantly finish her man off...Never takes a play off and drives through the defender with good intent and force...Easily digests a complicated playbook and makes good field adjustments to twists and games...Rarely makes a mental error and is very alert on the field...Vocal team captain who will not hesitate to take a teammate to task...Has a true passion for the game, playing with a warrior-like mentality...Hard worker who will do anything the coaches ask and is a model for good work ethic, especially in the weight room...Uses her long reach and size to neutralize edge rushers (see 2007 Michigan State, Illinois and Florida games), doing a solid job of reaching and sealing the "seven" technique...Has the ability to get under the defender's pads and dominate with her hand jolt, but does lack ideal explosion...Her hand punch will consistently shock and jolt the defender...Adequate in attempts to stay on his feet moving down the line and is effective at handling the switch-off...Will jolt the defenders on contact with his hands, locking on to steer out and work her man off the line...Drive blocks with excellent leverage and is consistent at moving the pile (see 2007 Northwestern, Eastern Michigan, Purdue and Florida games)...When dhe stays square in her base, she shows the footwork to get in front on traps and pulls...Very good with his reach-and-scoop skills, when she sinks her weight and stays low in her pads (better at gaining advantage and sealing off when getting movement on double teams)...Can locate and land in short space but isn't as effective on the long pull...Lacks timed speed, but is efficient at locating linebackers when asked to work into the second level...Very quick to set and recoil with his hands, showing good knee bend setting up in pass protection...Has no problems handling movement and is quick to react to stunts and blitzes...Does a good job of staying on his feet working in-line, where he can wall off and position with ease...Gets good movement in his drive blocks and, while he is a little tight in his hips, he works hard to take good angles and recover in his pass set...Can run his feet, stay up and sustain his blocks, showing aggression throughout his play...Works to finish and is patient on the pull, breaking down and staying under control at the second level...Can sink his hips and redirect, coming off the double team with good balance and anchor...Uses his hands like weapons in attempts to pick up stunts and can also catch the defender with his big mitts...Sees threats quickly and stays square in his base to absorb the edge rusher.

Negatives: A little tight in her hips, lacking ideal lateral agility in his kick-slide and can struggle when having to immediately change direction (will take false steps)...Has a strong hand punch, but tends to get them outside his frame, causing him to whiff a lot on a quick pass set (inconsistent placement)...Best operating in a short area, as he does show some balance issues when asked to run long distances...Needs to show better explosion off the snap when engaging defenders, but does compensate with a strong hand punch...When he gets too high in his stance, his base narrows and he will revert to over-extending in attempts to position and sustain...Must unlock his hips and explode more often into the defender, as he prefers to use his size to engulf or hands to sustain rather than blow up the defender (better earlier in games)...More effective working on an island with an edge rusher.

For while there may be a precedent for the name Lightstone, there is none for these inane resumes. In the past these things never happened. Are contacts important? But please don't write some sort of record with more background information then an application to the CIA . . .

The Berliner and the Lubavitcher - a historic Purim Redux in MP3

After Tzig gave us Harav Hutner I downloaded it onto my Zune HD and played it . . . a geshmak! (Tzig's YouSendit version maxed out - so download it here)
A Litvishe rendition of Daled Bovos (I think they skip the last fal!), other niggunim, a clear crisp Yiddish from the rabbbi himself, and even inyonim from Tanya.

After it all though . . . I yearned for more audio on my mp3 player to take with me.

. . . Tweeting to all Lubavitchers out there that I'd love to get my hands on the MP3 from famed Purim Tov Shin Chai farbrengen, I was answered withing minutes by Mrs. Mann.

Ashrecha Detroit that your shluchos have farbrengenish at their fingertips!

Enjoy Yidden:

Six of the Ten Commandments to Improve Lubavitch

I've been running a very off schedule lately - unable to sleep during normal hours, I've been lying down to sleep between 4:00 and 7:00 am, and getting up sometime around 11:00 - as e. would say in the Basement Blogger meme that is all the rage, 'A seder it is not.'

As such I tend to eat during off hours Breakfast = Several cups of coffee shortly after waking, Brunch = toast with cheese  around 3 or 4 pm, Dinner = Pasta or hot dogs around 9:00 . . . and Supper = a Hamburger at Empire Grill around 1 am . . . Yah. It's messed up.

Anyhow, a group of Israeli Bochurim learning in Kvetuza waited ahead of me in line. One of them ordered a Burrito (one need only imagine how he mangled the word)  . . . only to ask his friends what the Hecht it was he'd ordered. Of course my dear Chumus eating brethren had no clue.
As a born Angelino, I know all to well what a burrito is.
I explained the concept of beans, meat, rice and what in a tortilla (I called it a Mexican laffa made of corn) to him.
And with what did he repay my kindness to him with? He cracked jokes with his friends by imitating my American "Reish".

As such I feel the time has come to show the world my 10 commandments to better Lubavitch!

  1. Ban all use of Hebrew as a Lingua-Franca amongst Lubavitchers outside of Israel:                                                                                              This one is quit simple. I speak English, it's my mother tongue. But during my stay in Yeshivah i learned how to read and speak in Hebrew and Yiddish (not to mention a healthy smattering of Russian) . . . it's something all American bochurim do to one degree or another. The Frenchies do it, as do the Italians, Souther Americans and Russians. Every Lubavitcher learns at least one language to some degree besides his household dialect. Not the Lubavitcher Israelis. Too many of them speak only Hebrew - not because it's a holy tongue. Not because they're Zionists and feel it ought to be done. Not even because they have a love for the language. They do it because in their arrogance and ignorance they feel that they are the center of the world and must be catered too. It annoys the gówno out of me.
  2. Chassidisher Bochurim shouldn't buy the iPod Classic:                                                                                                                                                Let's be honest here. The iPod was a revolutionary device - Apple in its marketing genius perfected (though it did not create) the MP3 player. Today, while personal preference is always valid - some people like the iPod Nano or iPod Touch, others go for the Zune, the newer Sony Walkman series and Creative Zens are also quite good . . . Kulei Alma Modiim that the iPod Classic is antiquated.  As such - when Chassidishe Bochurim buy an iPod Classic for Sichos and Farbrengens (an amazing use for the technology) they're buying an inferior product out of ignorance because no one out there will tell them to get something better. That's lame. It also leads into problem number 3.
  3. Dorky Earphones:                                                                                                                                                                                             Walking around listen to Chassidus is an amazing thing. Doing it with the massive white ear buds of the iPod, or some other junky pair - and leaving the cord to hang out from ones coat pocket as it snakes up to ones ears . . . all in the (semi)social or public venues of walking down the street or while standing inline . . . is a douche thing to do. It looks lame . . .
  4. No Kvutza in 770:                                                                                                                                             This is a simple one. The Rebbe didn't want them in 770. They could be amazing chayus'dike bochurim . . . The Rebbe sent them to Chovevei Torah until they moved on their own accord some time after 27 Adar. This should really be part of problem number one . . . but I wanted the post to have at least 5 of the ten commandments.
  5. Undeserving People wearing a Kasket:                                                                                                              The kasket was worn by Russian Chassidim for dorei doros - the Rebbe wore one before his chasuna. Today for various reasons most Lubavitchers don't wear one. That's fine. Adaraba! Locals, Shluchim and long time residents (people who learned in Yeshivos etc) in Eastern Europe wear the kasket as mark of pride and badge of honor. Not Israeli bochurim. When they do it, they think they're chassidish . . . as R' Mendel and such wore a kastet. Feh! Wear it because you admit you're a простых солдат - and know what it means.
  6. Get rid of exploitationist sites:                                                                                                                                                                            Sites such as COL and CH.info aren't about news in Lubavitch . . . That's what Shmais does (rather slowly). They're about people exposing themselves to the world for pleasure of some and the financial gain of others. They're smut. They fail to accurately report the news - instead they pontificate on stupid things (The Head Shliach to Yehupitz put on a blue tie), push their opinion in the form of News, or put poorly written  or over verbose and bombastic English posts.

Will these issues solve the Tznius problem in Lubavitch? Help at risk youth? Or stop politics?

No.

But they'll make Crown Heights a far more enjoyable place to walk around in.
As you, my dear reader, may have so astutely noticed Commandments 7-10 are missing. Please suggest your own to add to this list . . . or make an entirely new one!

Mottel's Guide to Purchasing a Cell Phone

I recently put together a list of the latest cell phones with their relative Pros and Cons.

I decided to publish the write-up here for the benefit of the general public:

As there seems to be bit of confusion about the various smart phones on the market, I'm including few points on Blackberry verses Android phones, as well as some of the other options on the market.

Blackberry:

Pros:

  • Amazing email integration
  • BBM (blackberry messenger) - those who use it love it.
  • Solid build - the hardware is often solid
  • Security - especially for enterprises Blackberry's servers and encryption are considered very secure (it's reported that Mosad agents might have used BBM to communicate while in Dubai recently etc.)
Cons:
  • Outdated hardware - camera, processor speed, screen resolution etc. are all behind the curve.
  • Poor Web-browser - the experience of browsing the internet on most Blackberries is painful when compared to Andriod, Iphone etc. (The brand-new BB Torch is supposed to be better - though overall even that phone lacks in features).
  • Aging operating system: The BB OS (operating system) is very dated.
  • Limited App Market: Apps today rule the mobile world - BB doesn't have anywhere near the number of apps as other phones - though the basic chitas apps are all there.
Bottom Line:
The Blackberry is easy to use and does what it specializes in (BBM and Email) well. That being said, the devices are older and lack power to compete with modern handsets. If you already have BB and can't live without your BBM, then I suppose stick with it. I would have a hard time recommending it to someone as a first time phone.

Android:

Android is Google's open source operating system (Droid is a specific series of phones running the Android OS made mostly by Motorola and sold exclusively on Verizon). Open source means that anyone is free to develop for it (as opposed to Apple who rules iOS (the iphone operating system) with an iron first) this however has both a good and a bad side. The latest version of the OS -2.2 has Hebrew support.

As anyone can make an Android phone, many companies make various models that feature all kinds of designs. The HTC Evo 4g and Samsung Epic 4g are the top two on Sprint (4G means faster internet - though it's not yet rolled out in many markets and costs an extra $10 a month above the existing premium data plans - 4G also eats up battery juice very quickly), the HTC Droid Incredible and perhaps the Droid Pro (which has a blackberry like keyboard) on Verizon, the G2 (which has 4g like speeds) on T-mobile. Each phones has it's on ma'alos - so I'll focus on the general advantages shared by all Android phones.

There currently aren't any "chitas" apps (there's Rambam - but it's pretty hard to use, doesn't have a moreh shiur etc). I've been told that Jewishcontent.org will be coming out with all of their apps in the near future, but I haven't confirmed this myself.

Pros:
  • Open: Android is open to every developer and handset maker to design a phone. That means there's something for everyone out there in the world of Android. The Android marketplace, while lacking in the number of apps found in iPhone, today seems to offer everything found in the Apple app store. What is more, since Android is open, you're able to do things not possible on iPhone - such as run flash (for videos) on the latest version of Android OS 2.2 (called FroYo).
  • Features: Android phones are packed with features, they have all the basics - bluetooth, wifi, 3G internet, a great browser, man have good cameras with auto-focus (for scanning barcodes), fast processors, phones with physical keyboards for those that want the, - as well as such premiums as 4G (on the spring phones), Big Screens (on the Evo and Droid X), amOLED screens for vibrant color (on the Epic), HDMI for playing HD video on a big screen (if you ever want to stream living Torah on your Baal Habos's impressive home theater system), Swype for very fast typing (on the Droid X and Epic 4G), front facing cameras for video chat
  • Google: Google has come out with many amazing apps and features. You can take advantage of Google Voice (to record your voice mail as MP3s, forward your calls to various phones, screen calls and transcribe voicemail as an email or text message), Google Maps for amazing GPS; Google has various voice controls - so you can write your text messages with voice to text transcriptions, do google searches with voice, find directions etc; Google Goggles will take a picture of bar codes and scan them for you - letting you search for the same item online for cheaper, take pictures of logos and identify them for you, and translate certain texts (I believe French, German and Spanish); the phones have great Gmail integration as well.
  • Customization: You can customize the layout however you like - you can mix apps and widgets (such as weather, time, stock prices etc) on your home screen.
Cons:
  • Open: As Android is open to all developers, allowing for all kinds of devices, that means that what works for one Android phone won't work for another. Certain older sets aren't powerful enough for the latest version of the firmware (the latest version of the operating system) - in fact some phones are purposely made weaker and without the latest OS to be sold a "cheaper" phones. Since Android is so open, various phone manufacturers create various 'skins' for the OS. That means that the HTC "Sense UI" skin will look and feel different then the Samsung one or the Motorola one. Besides differences in look and features, these different skins mean that Google can't send out updates to the latest version of their OS (currently the FroYo 2.2 version - which has Hebrew support among other things) until the handset carriers have had a chance to update their user interface skins.
  • Learning Curve: Because Android phones sport so many features and are so customizable - they can be very overwhelming at first glance. As well, the design isn't a intuitive as, say, the iPhone OS - so you'll have to play around with it a bit to 'get' everything you can do. This problem is all compounded by the various styles and skins put on the Android phones.
The bottom line:

Android phones offer a wide range of handsets for every type of user, with many powerful features and all kinds of bells and whistles. This power is tempered by a slightly less intuitive user interface and the fractured environment where no two phones are the same.
If you want a powerful, state-of-the art phone, and you're willing to geek out a bit, then Android phones are the way to go.

iPhone:
We all know what it is, so I'll skip to the Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Apple Experience: You'll find a beautiful phone, basically ready to use out of the box with Apple's hallmark clean design, seamless user experience and intuitive OS.
  • App Store: The iPhone App store has the most apps of any other phone, with the latest and greatest available to you.
  • iPod: Every iPhone has Apples music playing features
Cons:
  • Closed System: You're playing in Steve Jobs' world. Jobs' doesn't like buttons - so you'll never see a keyboard on your iPhone. Apple doesn't like Flash (because they're in a fight with Adobe - the folks who make flash) so you'll never be able to play Flash videos or the like on your phone. Apple controls their app store with an iron fist - so if they don't like it, it won't go (for example they wouldn't let Google Voice in for ages, because it allowed for cheaper international calls etc.)
  • Apple doesn't take risks. That means you'll never have untested technology in your phone. Cut and Paste, Multitasking and the like were all delayed until far after they should have been out (they're here now). It also means that many of the latest advancements (like 4G) won't come out until after other phones have them.
  • AT&T: The iPhone (currently) is only available on AT&t's network - known for its spotty coverage. If you're not on AT&T - you're out of luck. (Though there are always rumors that Verizon will have an iPhone soon.

Bottom Line:

If you're on AT&T, go for it. If you love and live for Apple - the same applies. If not . . .

WebOS (aka the Palm PRE)

The Palm PRE was supposed to be the next BIG phone. Unfortunately it was late to market, featured a lackluster ad campaign, and shoddy hardware. It still has some interesting features and is worth an honorable mention

Pros
  • WebOS: The operating system is amazing. It's easy to use, powerful, and pretty to look at. Next to iPhone I think it's the best thing out there.
  • Physical keyboard
Cons:
  • Poor hardware: The phones weren't made very well, so they've been known to break. By today's standards they're also under powered.
  • Lack of developer support: Since few people purchased the phones, they're bottom of the list for app development. That means that programs that Android and iPhone have had for ages may not be out yet for webOS.
Bottom Line:
While I had the PRE and loved it, it's hard to recommend today when so many other options are out there. That being said, if you can find one for cheap on the market, and don't need the latest bells and whistles, the great interface may be worth it. HP recently bought Palm, so there should be better phones on the market in the future.

Windows Phone 7 was just announced for AT&T and T-Mobile. They're brand new, so I don't know much about them, but I love the Zune HD mp3 player that they're based on, and they look to be a nice middle ground between iPhone's easy interface and Android variety of features. We'll have to see what the future has in store.
