I can honestly look back and say that of all the experiences that I had that wild year in Eastern Europe, the trip we took to Hel is one that remains an island of serenity . . . Pressed between the Baltic and the Bay of Puck I learned a valuable life lesson:

Poland should rot in hell. With two L's.
Three days in Warsaw, Auschwitz, and Majdanek, and it was easy for me to understand just who our tormentors were and just who their descendants still are.
I don't know how Poland is worse the Ukraine . . . or France for that matter. The whole world sold us down the river during the War - save the Danes and the Bulgarians - I hold no special grudge to anyone group over the other.
Besides all the history about marauding Polish folks, I quite liked Poland. Almost enough to move there.
Maybe that's just because I was traveling from Ukraine ...

Here in Ukraine, people are stupid and lazy but so long as they have enough vodka and beer, they don't care about much of anything. Anti-Semitism in Ukraine is a problem and a big one, but as the standard of living increases (and the people at the bottom who are the troublemakers kill themselves off with vodka and beer), the problem will disappear. It is worse in parts of Ukraine that, unlike where I am in Dnepr, speak Ukrainian and not Russian and are more nationalistic. And what is Ukrainian? Polish written in Cyrillic characters!
In Poland, the disgusting local perversion of the Church continues to rule life, and anti-Semitism is taught by priests and used by politicians to get votes. Unlike the political anti-Semites in Ukraine, anti-Semitic clergymen and politicians are not marginal or shadowy figures.
