Matisyahu released his statement: http://matisyahuworld.com/news/detail/note_from_matisyahu/
A few thoughts:
- I wish Matisyahu, all the best in his personal journey - no matter where it takes him, if I agree with him or not.
- I make no judgments as to his motivations or other personal actions he takes in his life.
- I think Matisyahu's action, whatever the motivation, failed to take into account the ramification on his own life, that of his family, and those who look up to him - like it or not, he came to represent something beyond whatever he assumes himself to be.

Last comment is spot on.
***We do not know that this wasn't for medical reasons.** If he was having throat issues, he could not have made that public.
Yes, I agree -- especially with the last comment.
I teach Jewish high school students who also need the structure that Matisyau took upon himself for the past 10 years. The Jewish people have Divine power when they do so. However, if they will all rely on this type of life:
"... I felt that in order to become a good person I needed rules—lots of them—or else I would somehow fall apart. I am reclaiming myself. Trusting my goodness and my divine mission." ..then, imo, we may not have the same great potential as a Jewish nation as we would if we adhere to Torah and Mitzvos ! Even if just for Matisyahu's Branding and Marketing -- wasn't the 'external package' part of the draw and the mystique about him?
Sources I know seem to say that this isn't the case.
Really, I have no respect for anyone who is not bein da Zelig zechut, who is speaking lashing Hara or trying to place a bad light on anyone. I don't care who your sources are. At best, it is Lawson Hara and at worst or maybe equally bad, motzei Shem ra. This is between him and god, and speaking as a November survivor, his wife too.
Darn you autocorrect re above.
its the way it was done, no one should judge any one
