The letters of our thoughts are the ideas present in our mind before they come to realization . . . Thoughts that are, yet not felt . . . The words of the subconscious . . . of the soul . . .

These are the LETTERS OF MY THOUGHTS.

Just in Time for Kaporos

I know I put it up last year, but . . .

The Strange but True story of:

MIRACLE MIKE

The Headless chicken

Taken from Wikipedia

The unfortunate incident

On Monday September 10, 1945, farmer Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colorado, had his mother-in-law around for supper and was sent out to the yard by his wife to bring back a chicken. Olsen failed to completely decapitate the five-and-a-half month old bird, leaving one ear and most of the brain stem intact.

Not quite sure what to do with his by now loose head, on the first night after the decapitation Mike slept with it under his wing; it was this touching tenacity to life and the now redundant organ that convinced Olsen to reprieve Mike from the cooking pot.

Despite Olsen's botched handiwork, the by-now-headless Mike was still able to balance on a perch and walk clumsily; he even attempted to preen and crow, apparently not noticing that neither activity could be accomplished properly without a head. After the bird did not die, a surprised and no doubt guilty Mr. Olsen decided to continue to care permanently for Mike, feeding him a mixture of milk and water via an eyedropper; he was also fed small grains of corn. The unfortunate Mike occasionally choked on his own mucus, which the Olson family would clear using a syringe.

When used to his new and unusual center of mass Mike could easily get himself to the highest perches without falling. His crowing, though, was less impressive and consisted of a gurgling sound made in his throat, leaving him unable to crow at dawn.

Being headless did not stop Mike putting on weight; at the time of his beheading he weighed some 2 1/2 pounds and at the time of his death, this had increased to nearly 8.

More at Useless Information

And, if there was money to be made, there were also copycats. Other people in Mike's hometown began to chop the heads off of their own chickens in an attempt to get in on the scheme. One copycat headless rooster was named Lucky and he managed to live for eleven days before bashing himself into a stovepipe and dying (Lucky wasn't that lucky after all). Several other headless chickens lived for a couple of days. . . .

The exact date of Mike’s belated departure from this world was never recorded.  Years later, it was estimated, based on Lloyd’s information, that Miracle Mike died in March of 1947.  Eighteen months living without a head could be considered a world’s record.  Yet, Lloyd didn’t want to admit that he had accidentally killed the bird, so he claimed that he had sold the bird off.  This little white lie is the reason that many of the stories printed about Mike claimed that he was still touring the country as late as 1949.

G'mar Chasima Tova!
May we all be sealed for a sweet year, with blessings in all matters, and the greatest blessing for all . . . Moshiach!

On Mussar and Uman

From a recent Farbrengen:
In unesaneh tokef we speak about lowness of man, his origins are from dust, his life likened to a withering grass . . .
Then there is the Greatness of G-d, His infinite oneness . . . "V'atah hu Melech, Kel chai v'kayam" -that G-d is the King, a living and eternal G-d. There is no limit to His years, nor end to the length of His days . . .

Then we conclude:
"U'shmanu karasa vi'shmecha"
That you have called your name by our name . . .

Mussar looks at the lowliness of man, the nadir of his existence -how he must work on himself to better his existence . . .

Chakira looks at the greatness of G-d, the metaphysics of the divine, the sublime reality of the Eternal one . . .

Chassidus conlcudes -despite the lowness of man and the wonder of G-d, "U'shmanu karasa vi'shmecha" -G-d has chosen in us. He, with his free will, has vested in us power . . .
We can change the world.

The Rebbe once noted, what is the difference between chassidus and mussar?

  • Mussar kocht zich in fixing negative traits, anger, fear, lust . . . sur meirah -to turn away from evil
  • Chassidus kocht zich in prayer, contemplation in the divine, practical mitzvos . . . aseh tov -to do good.
If Mussar doesn't work on the person, what is he left with? Anger, fear, lust . . .
I Chassidus doesn't work on the person, what is he left with? Prayer, contemplation in the divine, practical mitzvos . . .

The Forward has some interesting pics from Uman.

I noted on Circus Tent
The Rebbe once asked the chief Rabbi of Romania if he was a chossid, the CR responded that he was a Breslover -the Rebbe wanted to know if it was b/c he didn't want a rebbe over him. (I forget the exact loshon but. . .)
Meaning too many people make it too easy tikkun kloli, dance etc.

Look at the above photo, how many of them are true "card carring" Breslovers?
I do not mean to, ch"v, belittle anyone's path in Avodas Hashem, but I know a great number of Jews, people with an earnest emunah in Hashem and Tzadikim, who have created themselves into a rather bland chullent. Confused, they do not gain the advantages of the many paths from which they've borrowed . . .

A great Video about Uman -from Circus Tent

The Kennedy Curse?

Reb Yisroel Jacobson

The Kennedy Curse refers to a series of unfortunate events that have happened to the Kennedy family . . .

There are several theories regarding the origin of the "curse". According to Kennedy detractor Edward Klein, there is a story that Joseph Kennedy made his way to the Court of St. James as ambassador in 1937. On a trip back to the United States, aboard an ocean liner that was also carrying a Lubavitcher rabbi named Israel Jacobson and six of his yeshiva students, who were fleeing the Nazis, Kennedy complained to the ship's captain about the distracting noises caused by the Jewish passengers praying on the high holy days of Rosh Hashanah. He demanded that they be forbidden to continue exercises so distracting to fellow passengers. "Rabbi Jacobson put a curse on Kennedy, damning him and all his male offspring to tragic fates."

The Riots That Aren't -or Munich 1938 . . . again

It's the third day of rioting in Brussels -not that the news would like us to know . . . CNN, Fox news, Yahoo, BBC . . . not a word.

What we're seeing now is Appeasement . . . Welcome to Munich 1938.
Terrorists and their cohorts are left to run amok, as a sympathising west closes it's eyes in the hope that they'll just go away . . .

"How horrible, fantastic, incredible it is that we should be digging
trenches and trying on gas masks here because of a quarrel in a
far-away country between people of whom we know nothing.
" -
Neville Chamberlain

Soviet poster of the 1930's by Kukryniksy on the Munich agreement

Third Night of Ramadan Rioting in Capital of Europe The Brussels Journal:

It looks as if immigrants youths want to turn nightly rioting during the Islamic holy month of ramadan into an annual tradition. Around 8:30pm last night violence erupted again in Brussels, the capital of Europe. The riots centered on the Brussels Marollen quarter and the area near the Midi Train Station, where the international trains from London and Paris arrive. Youths threw stones at passing people and cars, windows of parked cars were smashed, bus shelters were demolished, cars were set ablaze, a youth club was arsoned and a shop was looted. Two molotov cocktails were thrown into St.Peter’s hospital, one of the main hospitals of central Brussels. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fires at the hospital, but youths managed to steal the keys of the fire engine.
The up-side is with the growth of blogging, the truth is out there . . .
A quick Technorati search pulled up 563 blogs on the subject . . .

Truth be told, though, I'm tired of this politic bit . . . it never changes, only aggravates . . .
I'm going back to my J-blogging roots for a while.

Three A.M. Philosophy

I hate smoking . . .

I find it reprehensible

-perhaps it is due, to the main part at least, to my extensive anti-drug public school education

D.A.R.E. to keep a kid off drugs
Dare to keep a kid of dope . . .
Dare to give a kid some hope

The words still ring through my mind . . .

But I digress . . .

Though I've gotten beyond the stage of throwing away my uncles
cigarettes when he wasn't looking, I still look down on smoking -I
still feel distressed when I learn that people whom I hold dear or
know are in fact smokers . . .

I'm from LA, what can I do about it?

Last night I was asked by a younger bochur I know
-someone perhaps around 17 years old- to go to the store with him and
buy him something . . . as I was over 18 and all.

Jokingly, I asked him if he wanted a lottery ticket . . .

He grinned and said "You can get that as well . . ."

I refused to go with him, perhaps the fact that it was three in the morning added to it . . .  perhaps not . . .

I know I didn't stop him from smoking. That's his choice.

I know that, hypocritical as it may sound, I would probably have
bought alcohol for him had he asked (The only if had given a valid
reason as a farbrengin or the like) . . .

The Previous Rebbe asked the bochurim in the Yeshivos not to smoke -for the own good, both physical and spiritual . . .

It's also against yeshiva rules -though with a smoking Rosh Yeshiva, it's hard for most students to take the rule seriously

(I still remember how my class mates were taken into the smoke-filled office and told that smoking was bad for them)

In truth, for what ever reason, I just felt plain odd asking for a pack
of cigarettes at 7-11 . . . I'm almost afraid to touch the packing . . .

What would you have done?

Post-Rosh Hashanah Thoughts

  • I generally try to make sure before I make Kiddush on Shabbos or Yom-Tov night that I've learnt a timely Sicha
(Teaching on the Torah portion or the like) . . . It started as
necessity when running the Shabbos meals in Venice, Warsaw and Vilna .
. . The first night I sat down to learn the Sicha right before
I left for the meal. The second night, I reviewed something I had
learnt earlier in the week, and in the past as well . . . .
    When
repeating the sicha by the meal the first night, it seemed to almost
    flow . . . The second night, despite the better preparation . . .
  • It's impossible to have a Rosh Hashanah with out Chassidus.
  • When
looking for people to blow the Shofar for, I realized the essential
difference between Californians and the rest of the world . . .
    "I'm
so sorry, but I'm not Jewish -But I want to wish you a happy New Year.
    "
    -Compare that to a New Yorker . . . "Jewish? No! I'm
    Italian."
  • As well, I met a Russian from Mogeliv Podolski my Great-Grandmother's home town, a lady who heard the shofar that morning in Miami, and a "kabbalist"

"Gdansk is a true Polish city ,at least according to my guidebook. True it was controlled by the Prussians and then later the Germans for the past 600 years under the name Danzig -continues the guidebook . . . which is why it looks Amsterdam . . .which is in Holland -not Germany . . . but now the people are all Polish (because the Germans were expelled). True, adds the Guidebook, that most of the tourist are German -so almost everyone speaks German . . . oh, and the locals speak Kashubian . . . but the signs are in Polish. So, concludes the guidebook, one can clearly see that Gdansk is a truly Polish city.

This is History -Polski style."
