When speaking to Luis, the Yeshiva's cook of many years, he told me that his nephew had just given birth to a son; and therefore he, Luis, was looking for a name.
"How about John?" someone offered,
"No," Luis said, "I want an American name. John is Juan."
"George?" Someone else said.
"No, George is Jorge."
"Harold can't be too Spanish . . ." I proffered.
"No . . . Maybe a name like Mendy." Luis said, "I like Mendy."
"Mendy is a good name, but it's only used by Jews . . ."
"Only by Jews? Oh, ok, maybe something else. But I like that name."
To think there might have been a Mendel Gonzalez . . .
Go figure.
